Some questions about Peeta:
1. How does Katniss’ early encounter with Peeta affect their relationship after they are chosen as tributes?
2. Did your perception of Peeta change over the course of The Hunger Games? How and why?
3. Why does Peeta join with the Career Tributes in the beginning of the Games? What does he hope to gain? Why do they accept him when they start hunting as a group?

ReplyDelete1. How does Katniss’ early encounter with Peeta affect their relationship after they are chosen as tributes?
ReplyDeleteI think it makes Katniss uncomfortable because it reminds her of a time when Peeta had a very clear advantage over her. In some ways, though, being reminded of how Peeta helped her take care of her family to even though it meant suffering his mother's wrath, I wonder if this also allows Katniss to consider trusting Peeta and looking at him as a potential partner instead of just an additional competitor.

Peeta is such an interesting character (way more interesting than Gale in my opinion!) because your perception of him changes constantly throughout each book of the series and he's never really a character whose motivation I'm sure I understand or trust...but I find him likable and sympathetic all the same! He's a love-sick teenager, a backstabbing competitor, a truly devoted romantic interest all within the first installment of the series. He's equal parts confident and insecure, bumbling and clear-headed, jealous and infatuated. Suzanne Collins may not be the best author ever, but she created really interesting, flawed characters with this series. Part of why I think this is such an important series for young girls to read is because Katniss, more than any other character, is truly flawed and fascinating. The underwhelming number of interesting, well-developed, imperfect female characters in contemporary young adult fiction is appalling. Yay Hunger Games!
3. Why does Peeta join with the Career Tributes in the beginning of the Games? What does he hope to gain? Why do they accept him when they start hunting as a group?
I have always assumed that Peeta joined the Careers because he knew there was no other way to survive in the arena against them. I also believe he hoped he could keep them off of Katniss' trail for as long as possible and if need be, would sacrifice himself to help protect her. Not sure I have all the textual evidence I need to back that up completely though, so my students wouldn't accept that answer and you don't have to either! It's mostly just my gut feeling. And probably what I really want to be true!
These were great questions!
(some spoilers in here if you haven't finished yet! I tried to keep it to a minimum)

I think for Katniss it created a debt that she had to pay back somehow. I wonder if that would have changed for her if she had said "thank you" to him at school when they were young but I don't think so. I think she would still have felt like she owed him something. Does she pay him back? I think most definitely!
2. Did your perception of Peeta change over the course of The Hunger Games? How and why?
I think my perception of Peeta came to be that he and Katniss aren't perfect together. I think at the beginning I thought they did fit together but by the end I thought they most definitely didn't.

I think Peeta joins with the Career Tribute all to protect Katniss. He doesn't think he can win but he does think she can so he helps her. He does help her too. I don't think he had much to gain by working with them other than he would have food and water at the beginning. I think he knew he wasn't good in the woods and this maybe was a survival step for him to help her for longer. I think the careers let them help because they know how strong they are.
